Facing the Unexpected: Disaster Preparedness and Response in the United States

Preparedness is a state of mind. These books are listed for those who want to learn more about being self sufficient.

We've put together a few books from Amazon.com that may be of help to you. It is my belief that books are just a guide from the authors perspective. Each of us has different situations and lifestyles. Each of us has common sense, and to me, THAT is the most important attribute that will help us prepare, and survive emergencies. Free information put out by government and private agencies on our "be prepared" page will help considerably. When I speak to people, the hardest part of being prepared is simply "doing it". Even well intentioned people put it off.

Though it is very hard for me to say, I must say it here: What if every family in the Gulf put together disaster supplies including an individual "mobility bag" of water, a little food, socks, shorts, first aid kit, flashlight, spare batteries, money, important documents, a radio and other critical supplies? What if that bag were a backpack that went everywhere that person went (including the attic). What if everyone living below water level put an axe in their attic? What if everyone created a disaster/evacuation plan in case loved ones got seperated they knew where to go and how to get in touch with each other? Could some of the pain and suffering be lessened?

I say this not to be hurtful. I say these hard words so that we all learn, and act. I created this site so that it could do some good, somewhere, for individuals and families. If it provides a small level of comfort to one person, then it has done its job.  Michael
